Simply put, I was a skeptic about chiropractic. My father used to tell me that chiropractors were “quacks.” Being a product of my upbringing, the thought never crossed my mind to visit a chiropractor.
It wasn’t until a life changing car accident with friends at the age of eighteen, that I was introduced to chiropractic care. A family friend recommended that I go see the late Dr. Bob Fox, who at the time was a retired chiropractor living in his motor home. Every time I wanted to get adjusted, I would have to call him up and find out where he was parked! My parents and I would go and get adjusted as a family, and after the adjustments we would sometimes sit and visit for an hour or more. Dr. Fox became a powerful mentor to me. By this time, I was earning my B.S. in Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington. Because of the accident, I wanted to pursue a career that would offer hope and renewal to people like us, going through difficult times. Well on my way to a career in audiology, Dr. Fox asked me one day, “Why would you ever want to be anything but a chiropractor?” I pondered his question, and had to agree wholeheartedly with his line of thinking.

It was one month after the 9/11 tragedy. I could not sleep. I sat at my dining room table reviewing stats, financial projections, and adjusted budgets. My mind was consumed with an idea that had grown huge over the past couple weeks, and that night, I found myself reviewing the total implications of adopting this new style of running my practice.
In some respects the idea was crazy. From a pure business perspective it was foolish, maybe suicidal. However, the idealistic side of me knew that this approach to health care was the most congruent with everything I believed about healing, my responsibility as a doctor, and what it means to provide the best care to my patients.
So after pondering the matter deep into the night, I prayed and as dawn broke I finally felt a quiet confirmation in my mind and heart that I should take this leap of faith.
